Caring for your pearl earrings

Pearls have always been a special type of jewelry. The pearl itself is organic. It grew inside an oyster and was harvested, cleaned and polished before being matched up for your earrings.
Even if your pearls are "cultured", they are organic, since culturing pearls means that the initial irritant (like sand) is placed in the oyster shell to force the creation of a pearl.
You must be very careful what you use to clean your pearls, because unless they are fake plastic, they will be marred by some cleaning solutions. Here is the best way to make sure your pearl earrings last for generations:

Don't put them in your ears until after your hair and make-up are done. Keep hairspray and cosmetics off your earrings when possible.
Wipe them with a clean soft cloth (tee-shirt, diaper-like) when you take them off.
Don't spray perfume or hairspray on them if you can avoid it.
If you get spray on them, wet the soft cloth before you wipe them and then let them dry before you put them away.
Never use ammonia or cleaners with ammonia. A mild soap (like Ivory) can be used if necessary, but don't overdo it.
Don't every use anything abrasive. The coating will come off and you'll be left with a plain old bead.
No ultrasonic cleaners either.
