What to give?
First, think simple. Simple usually translates to fast and in the work environment, efficiency is good. The best way to get the boss to frown on socializing is to visibly waste time doing it.

Simple means flowers, candy, balloons, or any quick traditional gift that can be ordered online in 5 minutes and then delivered right to the recipient, with the appropriate BIG DEAL gathering for oohs and aahs.

For a really special occasion, or one that requires a more "thoughtful" gift, choose something that doesn't touch. No perfume, no jewelry (except for pins or cufflinks), no clothing (except custom teeshirts, etc.).

Again, it helps to think simple. In this case, you want a simple object combined with a luxury or classy material.

Think picture frame, mouse pad, travel accessory, bookmark, desk set, paperweight. Now combine any one of those items with the words leather, silver, gold, embossed, engraved, tooled, etc. Now you've got it.

You can even personalize something and to get extra points, make reference to a known hobby or interest. Think specific dog breeds, sports team, golf, travel, etc.

If you have a group of employees to buy for, it's best to make the items all alike. Personalization can add a apecial touch. You can mix up the colors if that's an option, or make various choices in the same category. Examples of this would be desk sets in different colors, or different posters with motivational themes.

One of my favorite supervisors gave our entire group the same gift every year. We always got the latest executive book from a best selling motivational author, with a bookmark that reflected our personal style.
